In most realistic discussions in common parlance it is important to first understand something about the meaning of words in their relation to what we would ultimately call reality.

TO CHOOSE FROM:
And, more important, the unavoidable limitations of mere words in more complex discussions.
For example what do we mean by mind?
Most people have some idea what they mean when they use this word.
But it may get complicated when we want to use it in a more complex context like Global mind.
The thing to remember is that in every day life its good enough to have a general idea about what we are talking about when we use words.
We must simply accept the fact that very few people mean exactly the same thing when they use a word.
This of course leads to confusion when we realy want to get to the bottom of things.
But that is not always necessary.
When we want to get to the bottom of things we must use scientific methods. Methods by which we can express the word in figures. Figures with which we can make predictions about our reality. Predictions that can be verified using scientific procedures. This way we can check if the word covers our reality as we intend it.
The only way to check if a word has any REAL meaning is to verify if we can predict with it.
For example if we want to get to the bottom of the word intelligence we could begin by developing a test giving figures. Then we could use the figures to test the prediction that university students as a group would get higher figures then a group of farm hands of similar age. This prediction would be made on our assumption that university students would have a higher intelligence as intended by the word "intelligence" ( if we want to get to the bottom of the concept "common sense" our prediction would probably be the other way around ).
When comparable studies with the same test keep pointing in the same direction a moment will come that the test is accepted as "being" intelligence. In the same way as temperature is that what is measured by a thermometer.
Many test have been developed in this way that measure intelligence and a lot of other aspects of the person being tested. This way a personality profile is obtained and it could be easily defended that this unique profile represents the mind of that particular person.
Of course the procedures used to obtain "valid" measures for words are extremely time consuming.
We would not get very far in everyday life if we had to work that way all the time.
The practical thing is to accept that in general discussions a certain amount of vagueness is simply unavoidable.
This may lead to only partially solved problems for some time. But it may give us a feeling that we have at least a vague common idea about aspects of reality that mutually concern us in daily life.
When it becomes obvious that we are dealing with issues that continue to deeply concern many people for a very long time, specialists can and will develop methods to deal with the problem area in a more definitive way often in very small and time consuming steps.
But then it would be worth the effort.
When considering the possibility of Global mind emergence only specialised groups now believe in this as a realistic near certainty.
But then of course the conditions for a scientifically defendable probability of this have been with us only for a fraction of a second on the million year time scale of human evolution....
It is important to note however that the emergence of a global mind when it occurs, and it will, will be as easily established as the emergence of the mind of a single human.
We have tried to explain that any serious discussion must first start with checking if the words we use have anything to do with Reality.
Ultimately this is done by checking if we can predict with the word.
Predict things in reality "as we intend it".
It is important to emphasize here that when we say predict , we mean
: Predict with a verifiable degree of certainty.
For this type of prediction the word must be "processed" scientifically.
So it can fit in scientific programs for verifying predictions.
Scientists then set up scientific experiments to check if the word "behaves" as it should, if it really means what we intend it to mean.
Relevant for this website the author has conducted many experiments with human minds, often in life threatening situations.
To illustrate what we have just discussed and summarized some of these experiments, with related methodological considerations, will be described (in simplified form) under VALIDATION OF CONSTRUCTS in SPECIALIZED ESSAYS - ADVANCED LEVEL.
